JewsWeek.com Will you marry me? Blaire Allison is on a mission to get herself married before New Year's. Are you her husband? by Chanie Cohen August 2, 2004 151 days. That's how long Blaire Allison gives herself to be engaged. "My goal is to be engaged by December 2004" her Web site declares. Yes, you heard right, her Web site. Launched on June 21st, 2004, marryblaire.com is Ms. Allison's cyberspace mating call. She is looking to get married, and she is not ashamed to admit it, even though she observes that most women are. In a recent phone interview, Allison shares her observations. "No one admits to one another [that they want to get married]," she says. "To each other, they pretend like its fine." But to Blaire Allison, it's not fine. "I do everything that everyone else does, going out, being matched up, Internet dating, going to singles events, but you still need to be proactive, you still need to help fate along." And helping fate she is. On her Web site, underneath a bold headline "Do you know my husband?" is a close-up picture of Blaire Allison, and underneath that is a candid description of herself. Designed in an intimate style, Allison talks directly to her Web site readers, informally recounting her dates and emotions for all to read. On another section of the site, entitled "My Husband," she directly states what it is she's looking for in a guy. "Witty, confident, intelligent, a go-getter." Just a few of the qualifications. Ironically, Allison's life is centered on helping others' relationships. She runs a successful bachelorette party planning business, and also works as a dating coach. "I actually used to be a matchmaker on a dating show," Allison explains. "I coach myself as well, and I was doing these singles events, but it just wasn't working to its potential. So I came up with this idea to be more proactive." What finally prompted her to do it? Always interested in spiritual matters, Allison learns Torah weekly with a study partner at Aish HaTorah in New York City. She immediately realized that everyone around her was talking about one thing. "In more religious sects, everything's focused towards marriage, not like in secular society. People would talk about marriage left and right, and I love it." Originally, Allison was going to stand outside synagogue on a Saturday morning, where she would hand out flyers with her vital stats and her Web site contact info. Not wanting to offend Sabbath synagogue goers, she opted against it. Bit not to worry. Her site has become a success even without passing out flyers. While she was still in the designing stages of the site, Allison read "600 hits" on her Web site counter one morning. "I didn't think much if it," Allison recounts. "I figured maybe there was something wrong with the counter." But when she came home that night, and sat down to add some finishing touches to her site, she realized it was no mistake. "The counter had 1800 hits." Without doing a stitch of promotion for the site, Allison began to receive hundreds of e-mails a day, and has already done numerous television and radio interviews. An article about her quest for a husband has even appeared in the New York Times. It seems Allison's openness has encouraged many women to follow suit. "I have a lot of women supporters," Allison says. A sample from her comment page: "You are a true inspiration to all of us in your boat. Absolute best of luck. You go girl!" Allison says that a lot of women are just tuning in to see what happens. So what is happening? "I've been going on at least one date a week," Allison says, and even though most don't have romantic potential, "I've made friends out of the guys." On her "He's a Keeper" page, she talks about the men she's liked and will continue to date. But Allison will also continue to meet and date other men. She is fully in control of her relationships and believes that most women don't realize that they are too. "I think a lot of women don't give themselves credit. We're the ones who give him the nonverbal cues," she explains, wearing her dating coach hat. "Although he's the one making the first physical step of coming over, we're the ones who signal him to come over. In the end, we're the ones choosing the men. They're the ones trying for our affection." So what's next for Allison? "Literary agencies have contacted me about writing a book, probably a self-help book using my dating coaching skills," Allison says. Indeed, she has lots of advice for women in her position. "Be true to yourself," Allison affirms confidently. "If I knew the whole world was going to be looking at the Web site, I would have never put it up. People ask me, 'Blaire, you're a good looking girl, why are you doing this?'" She pauses and laughs at the notion. "What does that have to do with anything? I want to find the one and that's it. You have to be honest with what's in your heart." |
